Frequently Asked Questions

Why see a Biokineticist?

With a biokineticist you have the opportunity to train with a specialized exercise therapist that functions in a holistic manner with other professionals and health specialists. A biokineticist is registered with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa and is also a member of the Biokinetics Association of South Africa. Therefore, a biokineticist is fully qualified and registered to give rehabilitation related advice.

What can I expect?

We start with an initial consultation and thorough assessment. During the initial consultation, a full medical and orthopedic history will be taken and the condition will be discussed thoroughly. The biokineticist will perform appropriate tests to obtain a better picture of where the weaknesses or imbalances are. Based on these findings and the consultation a treatment plan will be discussed in detail.

What happens during the consultation?

A variety of assessments, depending on the conditions, will be done during the evaluation. Hereafter a treatment plan will be drawn up accordingly. These assessments include a range of functional movements to determine muscle strength and/or flexibility imbalances as well as to identify instability and faulty biomechanics. Hereafter, an exercise program specific to the clinical pathology will be prescribed.

How many sessions do I need?

The number of sessions with the biokineticist will vary from person to person, depending on what your goals are. The aim will be to provide you with the most effective and efficient treatment plan.

Is a referral letter needed to see a biokineticist?

You do not have to be referred by a medical or healthcare professional to see a biokineticist.
